Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is transmitted to the outside company that provides that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its response. Hanover County Criminal History does not keep or log those search terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email may be retained for as long as needed to respond. It remains within the organization unless disclosure is required by a valid legal obligation.
Data We Gather Automatically
When a page loads, the server may receive routine technical and usage details:
- Page-view times and time spent on visited pages
- Browser type and version
- Device category and operating system
- The device's assigned IP address
- A referring website, when one is supplied
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files stored by a browser. They and analytics services help produce grouped traffic measures, such as popular pages and common exit points. Browser controls can block cookies, although disabling them may change how some functions behave.
What We Do With This Data
- Finding and correcting technical faults
- Maintaining reliable, responsive site operation
- Routing a search query to the selected outside provider
- Measuring which resources visitors use
- Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Hanover County Criminal History does not maintain, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to Hanover courts, the Sheriff's Records Unit, the Virginia Department of State Police CCRE, and the Virginia State Police Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Visitor data is not turned into a consumer report or a file about another person, and this site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Their privacy terms, not this policy, govern information submitted through those tools. Each provider sets its own rules for retention, processing, and disclosure, so review those terms before sending a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links lead to official Hanover offices, Virginia courts and agencies, and separately run services. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's privacy policy controls. Review it before providing personal information.
Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across websites and select ads. Their tracking practices are outside our control.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:
- Analytics providers that measure site use and performance
- Search providers that process a visitor's submitted query
- Advertising networks that deliver ads
- Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable security measures are used to protect collected data. No internet service can guarantee absolute security, so a breach cannot be ruled out despite those safeguards.
Users Under 18
The site is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If such information is identified, it may be requested for deletion.
Your Data Rights
Applicable law may provide further rights. The Virginia Freedom of Information Act governs access to records of Virginia public bodies, while Virginia Code § 19.2-389 controls dissemination of CCRE criminal histories. Those laws do not turn this private site into a government record custodian. For data held by this site, a visitor may:
- Request access to personal information held about the visitor
- Ask that inaccurate personal information be corrected
- Request deletion where the law permits it
- Object to certain processing activities
Updates to This Policy
This policy may be revised. Any replacement will appear here with a new effective date, so visitors should review the current version when they return.
Effective date: August 10, 2026
